PopCap Games is reporting that the new iPhone version of its preeminently popular Plants vs. Zombies game sold more than 300,000 units in its first nine days, setting a new record for Apple App Store launches.

Shooting to the number one position the day it became available and remaining in that position until yesterday, Plants vs. Zombies for iPhone has already grossed more than US$1 million, a feat all the more remarkable considering the game's relatively low price point of $2.99.

Originally launched on the PC and Mac to universal acclaim less than one year ago, consumers who have purchased the iPhone adaptation of Plants vs. Zombies have also made it the highest rated iPhone App of any kind. More than 95 percent of consumers have given the title 5 out of 5 stars using the App Store's rating convention.

A quirky and addictive title in the "castle defense" genre, Plants vs. Zombies has players defending their home with weaponized flora against waves of nercomanced fauna, AKA Zombies. Read Evergeek's Five Star review at evergeek.com/gamereviews/plantsvszombies/.

PopCap also revealed that the company's flagship title, Bejeweled 2, a title consistently in the top 10 of the App Store's Top Grossing list, is now the first paid App to reach 3 million units.

With the success of Plants vs. Zombies, PopCap now boasts three games (including Bejeweled and Peggle) that have reached #1 on the App Store.
