Combining console controller conventions with mouse sensibilities, the patent-pending FragFX for PlayStation3 (PS3) from Edmonton-based SplitFish features a right-side mousepad base along with a custom mouse that includes typical left-click/right-click buttons, middle buttons in lieu of right shoulder buttons, plus thumb-activated, PlayStation-specific Triangle, Circle, X, and Square buttons on the side.

For the left hand there's an abbreviated SixAxis PS3 console controller dubbed the FragChuck, which can be mounted or held separately, much like the Nintendo Wii's Nunchuck controller add-on. The FragChuck is both motion sensitive as well as home to an analog thumbstick and the other buttons normally found on a complete SixAxsis controller, plus a speed dial to control the mouse sensitivity back on the right side.

"For years, first person shooter players have had less than an optimum experience when playing on a console," remarked SplitFish CEO, Cisco Schipperheijn. "SplitFish’s FragFX brings PC-like movement, precision and performance to the console FPS."

SplitFish also asserts the FragFX has been optimized as a navigation tool for Sony's recently announced PlayStation Home virtual community.

FragFX is expected to ship in April with a wired version retailing for US$59.99. A US$69.99 Bluetooth wireless version is also expected "later."
