MLB 09: The Show
As with MLB 09: The Show on PlayStation3 and PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation2 version builds on a solid foundation while also suffering a couple of newly introduced hitches. Still, as the least expensive of the three, it's well worth a looksee.

As with the PSP version, MLB 09: The Show doesn't sport the high-def visuals nor some of the more nuanced animations and environmental effects of the mighty PS3 version, but it still looks good by PS2 game standards.

On the downside, both console versions are currently enjoying some rather serious lag issues when played online - the PSP's online component is a relatively smooth affair, though it's not clear if it was just dumb luck during testing, all things considered...

Interestingly, while all three versions of MLB 09: The Show have made a push toward "realism" by having players commit more errors - which doesn't really manifest with star players but rather with rookies and their tendency to "drop the ball" more often - the affectation is more evident in just the PS2 rendition of the game. Go figure. This little touch doesn't really detract from gameplay much and it can, in fact, enhance the experience so long it's the opposing team doing the dropping.

Costing half the price of the PS3 counterpart and 10 bucks less than the mostly similar PSP version (which is dissimilarly portable, obviously), MLB 09 on PS2 might lack in graphical gonads but it still represents a rock solid showing for The Show.

Thus, considering the low price point out of the gate, you could consider spending the coin to grab it right now. That said, waiting a tad would likely see the game's inborn latency issues remedied and will maybe see a few pre-played copies popping up and costing lesser still, too. Bonus.
