At the risk of overly-simplifying such a rich and diverse artistic medium as film, there are basically two types of movies: those that maintain the status quo, and those that push boundaries and take motion pictures into bold new territories.

We Own the Nights is one of the former, relying on tried and true cinematic themes such as sibling rivalry, betrayal of friendship, and tragic violence.

But that doesn't detract from the level of entertainment proffered. The story is skilfully told by director James Gray, who guides a strong cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix as the owner of a crime-ridden New York club, Mark Wahlberg as his badge toting brother, and Robert Duvall as the Pater Familias.

Tensions rise when one brother busts the other's joint, forcing Phoenix to choose between his semi-estranged family and his current, less than law-abiding associates. It doesn't quite reach the level of classic crime dramas like The Departed or Goodfellas, but it ought to satisfy most people who enjoy the genre.

The Blu-ray and DVD editions offer identical special features, including the obligatory commentary from director Gray and a few mini-documentaries that explore the movie's action sequences, locations, and the experiences had by cast and crew during production.
